Skin Biopsies

A skin biopsy is one of the most common and essential procedures in dermatology. It involves removing a small sample of skin tissue to diagnose or rule out various skin conditions. The tissue is examined under a microscope to provide critical information about the health of your skin.

Why is a Skin Biopsy Done?

A skin biopsy is typically performed for several reasons:

  1. Diagnosis of Skin Cancer: One of the primary reasons for a skin biopsy is to evaluate suspicious moles or lesions that might be cancerous. Conditions like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma can be diagnosed early through this procedure.

  2. Rashes and Skin Disorders: Sometimes, chronic or unusual rashes require a biopsy to determine the exact cause. This could include conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or autoimmune diseases.

  3. Infections: A biopsy can help identify bacterial, fungal, or viral infections when other diagnostic methods aren’t definitive.

  4. Inflammatory Skin Conditions: Biopsies are often necessary to pinpoint underlying issues in more complex conditions, such as lupus or vasculitis.

The Procedure

Skin biopsies are typically quick and performed in-office. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, and depending on the situation, your dermatologist will remove a small piece of skin using one of three methods:

  • Shave Biopsy: A thin layer of skin is removed.

  • Punch Biopsy: A circular tool is used to remove a deeper core of skin.

  • Excisional Biopsy: The entire lesion is removed if necessary.

Post-Biopsy Care

After the procedure, your dermatologist will provide instructions for caring for the biopsy site. Most patients can return to normal activities right away, though the area may be sore for a few days. Once the biopsy results come back, your dermatologist will discuss the findings and recommend the next steps.
