Mole Removal
Moles, also known as nevi, are common skin growths that many people have throughout their lives. They usually appear as small, dark brown spots but can vary in color, size, and shape. Most moles are harmless, but in some cases, they can pose cosmetic concerns or even health risks, particularly if they show signs of becoming cancerous.
How Are Moles Removed?
There are several ways a dermatologist can remove a mole, depending on its size, location, and whether it's suspected to be cancerous:
-
Surgical Excision: The mole is cut out entirely, and the wound is closed with stitches. This method is often used for larger or potentially dangerous moles. This is performed in-office under local anesthesia.
-
Shave Excision: The mole is shaved off with a small blade, leaving a flat surface. This method is ideal for smaller moles.
-
Laser Removal: In some cases, a mole may be removed with a laser, which helps minimize scarring. This method is more commonly used for non-cancerous moles. This option not currently available at EVI Dermatology.
Why Should You See a Dermatologist for Mole Removal?
Although mole removal might seem like a simple procedure, it’s important to have it done by a trained professional. A board-certified dermatologist can ensure that the mole is removed safely and evaluate it for any signs of skin cancer. Attempting to remove moles at home can lead to infection, scarring, and incomplete removal, potentially missing a serious diagnosis.
