Lipoma Removal

A lipoma is a benign, slow-growing lump of fatty tissue that forms just beneath the skin. While they are generally harmless and painless, some people may choose to have them removed due to discomfort, cosmetic concerns, or rapid growth.

What Are Lipomas?

Lipomas are typically soft, rubbery, and moveable under the skin. They can vary in size from a small pea to several inches in diameter. Though most lipomas are small and asymptomatic, in rare cases, they can press on nerves or other structures, causing discomfort.

Who Gets Lipomas?

Lipomas are most common in adults between the ages of 40 and 60, though they can occur at any age. They tend to run in families, suggesting a genetic component. While the exact cause is unknown, lipomas are thought to develop from an overgrowth of fat cells.

When Should You Consider Removal?

Though lipomas are non-cancerous and generally harmless, you may consider removal if:

  • The lipoma is painful or growing rapidly

  • It’s located in a bothersome area

  • You’re concerned about its appearance

  • There’s uncertainty about whether it's a lipoma or another type of growth

How Are Lipomas Removed?

Lipoma removal is a minor procedure that can usually be performed in-office. There are several methods available, including:

  • Surgical Excision: The most common method, where the lipoma is cut out under local anesthesia.

  • Liposuction: Less invasive, this technique involves suctioning out the fatty tissue through a small incision. It is done under sedation and performed in the operating room

  • Minimal Incision Removal: A technique that combines small incisions with extraction, offering quicker recovery times

Most patients can return to normal activities shortly after the procedure with minimal downtime.

While lipomas are usually harmless, they can sometimes be a nuisance. If you have a lipoma that’s causing discomfort or concerns, visiting a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation and treatment is the best option.

At EVI Dermatology, we perform surgical excisions only.  Liposuction and MIR will need to be referred out to plastic surgery.
